The Unluckiest Year Ever for J
As many of you know, the original Lucky J’s trailer was stolen this Christmas Eve. As upsetting as this may be, in the grand scheme of things it seems trivial. Some of you know me personally, but the details of my life are probably unknown to most. I generally would refrain from using this forum for anything other than a professional purpose. However, the events of the past year have certainly had a negative impact on the business despite my best efforts. I wanted to go on the record and address these issues.
Earlier this summer I was injured in a freak accident and suffered extensive damage to my left hand. After reconstructive surgery and rehabilitation I lost almost two months of ‘work’. The financial impact of the loss was as damaging as the physical damage.
In the beginning of November, my three-year-old son passed away after enduring a lifetime of suffering. Lev spent a third of his life at Dell Children’s Medical Center and his care has been my primary focus. Despite the circumstances, I opened Lucky J’s knowing that I could be called away to the hospital at a moment’s notice. This summer he fought and lost his second bout with Lymphoma. He was an amazing soul and I never will regret being at his side even if it meant neglecting my other duties.
In the fallout of dealing with our Son’s illness and death, my wife and I decided to end our 10-year relationship. There is no dirty laundry to air; just two sad, tired parents grieving in their own ways.
So yes, there are times when the trailer has been closed without notice. And I’m sure there are times when our guests have had less than the ideal experience. I apologize and hope this serves as an explanation and not an excuse. We are committed to being awesome and hope to give our customers the best experience possible. We are gearing up for the LiveStrong Marathon and SXSW and hope to blow the socks of everyone.
But now my trailer has disappeared on Christmas. One final insult before the year is over. Despite the emotional, physical and financial wear and tear of the last year, I remain hopeful about the future. One of the things that has gotten me through this past year has been the help of others and the kindness of strangers. I’ve learned to not let my pride get in the way of the reality of the situation and to take help from others when it is needed.
On that note, I would like to ask our loyal customers and the other good people of Austin to help support us through this rough time. Come by and tell us that you love us. Buy a taco. Or if you feel inclined, make a donation through paypal to jbizness@sbcglobal.net. It all helps. We’ve got some great things in store for Austin in the New Year, but we aren’t shit without your support.
Thank you for listening to my sob story. Ultimately I think we make our own luck, and I have every intention of making Lucky J’s live up to it’s name in the future.
Peace,
J

Are you famous and a fan of fried chicken?
The Producers of “Eat St.” would like an Austin-Based Celebrity to appear on the Lucky J’s episode. Seriously. As I do not personally know anyone who fits the bill, I’m putting the word out there…have their people call my people. ; )
